when the mind dwells on sense objects, attachment
arises. from attachment comes desire, and from
desire, anger is born.
from anger comes delusion; delusion leads to loss
of memory; loss of memory destroys intelligence,
and when intelligence is lost, one is ruined.
but one who is free from attachment and aversion,
even while engaging the senses with objects,
with self-control and discipline— such a person
attains peace.
the peaceful one is freed from all sorrows.
for the tranquil mind, wisdom becomes steady.
the undisciplined person lacks wisdom, and
without wisdom, there is no meditation. without
meditation, there is no peace, and without peace,
how can there be happiness?
when the mind is led by the senses toward objects,
it carries away one's wisdom— just as a boat is
swept away by the wind on water.
therefore, one whose senses are completely
restrained from objects in every way, whose mind is
steady and controlled— that person’s wisdom
becomes firm.
what is night to all beings is day to the disciplined
sage. what is day to worldly beings is night to the
wise one who sees truth.
just as rivers flow into the ocean, yet the ocean
remains unmoved and full— so too, one who is
unmoved by desires attains peace, not one who is
driven by craving.
